Sheyla Abston – Head Girls' Basketball Coach

I’m Sheyla Abston, and basketball has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. I played throughout high school, both in recreational leagues and on competitive AAU teams in California. My coaching journey began at Sacramento Start—an organization similar to the Boys & Girls Club—when I was just 20 years old.

In 2005, I moved to Alabama with a clear goal: to pursue a career in coaching and athletics. Over the past 11 years, I’ve had the privilege of coaching student-athletes at various levels, and my passion for the game has only grown stronger.

My coaching philosophy focuses not only on developing basketball skills but also on teaching valuable life lessons. I emphasize a fun, enjoyable approach to the game while fostering discipline, teamwork, and unity among players. Helping athletes grow both on and off the court is what drives me every day, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to impact young lives through the sport I love.

Jeremiah Brand – Assistant Girls’ Basketball Coach

Some of my favorite memories growing up happened on a basketball court. I played on middle school and high school teams, and while it has been quite a while since then, I've never left the game. Whether playing, watching, learning, or coaching, basketball has always been an important part of my life.

I've enjoyed coaching recreational league teams for my son, and I'm excited to begin coaching at the school level while continuing to teach 8th grade science.

In life, I try to be guided by a growth mindset, honesty, faith, and gratitude. On the basketball court, I value attention to detail, communication, positivity, hard work, and continual growth. My goal is to help our players develop not only as athletes but also as confident, resilient student athletes.

I'm excited for the opportunity to learn, grow, and win!
